Another timelapse experiment... and another lesson learned: time lapse equipment will do you little good, if you have the patience of a hungry puppy. 31 frames was all I got. Not even enough for the Vimeo timeline to disappear.

So, I'm in the middle of this comic book craze... Or, "graphic novels" as we call them when superheroes aren't involved?

I'm simultaneously hooked on The Walking Dead and Y: The Last Man, and have rediscovered the interest in the simple line of a comic book drawing, that has the potentiel to express more than a deluxe digital painting. I mowed through Understanding Comics, and became totally hooked on his explanations of how characters in comics are ICONIC drawings, whereas objects and landscapes can be more detailed and realistic.

So, I came up with ballet girl here. The next goal is to finish an "out of context" comic book page.

So outside our window, we have a view of this circle of trees... and tonight there's an epic fog, like something out of Edgar Allan Poe's mind. And these epic god rays shine out from the trees. I have no clue what's going on down there.

I quickly whipped the fastest f/1.8 lens on the camera and snapped this image. I then immediately switched lens to a wider one, put it on the tripod to get a nice ISO 200 exposure, and litterally JUST as I was about to push the button, the lights disappeared...

Vacuum chase!

For this image, I drew a random doodle as a start, to see what I could make out of it.

Stine saw a wizard talking to an angel - I saw a vacuum cleaner chasing a potato wearing a newspaper hat...

Unfortunately, I didn't save the doodle so you could tell me what you see.

I tried to get speed into the image by painting some sort of background motion blur, but it's like the characters - particularly the potato - aren't dymanic enough to convey the speed of the scene.

Hey all... if this blog has any readers but myself, they - you - will have noticed the daily images have been posted on a slightly less-than-daily basis, since the opening last week...

This is due to yet another job requiring late-night work... so here's a quick daily image showing what I do instead of making daily images...!

...any similarity to a Brad Bird character is strictly coincidental, I tell you.

Honestly, to be fair, I also think I have to mention John Kenn's monster drawings as inspiration.

Like the fantasy piece, this is also sloppy and fast, but this time I focused on a tighter composition from the beginning, and used silhouette as a cheap trick to avoid painting details for hours.

I hereby declare my image blog open!

This is an experiment in doodling without intention of finishing as a real painting - and then finishing anyway... The initial doodling was very sloppy, which is why there's a bunch of basic problems such as poor composition and chopped off feet, but doodling without grand intentions really helps loosen up and paint instead of think.
